Why filtered water is becoming a New Zealand kitchen essential

New Zealanders expect the water from their kitchen tap to be clean, fresh and ready to drink. While our drinking-water system continues to improve, recent findings have also reminded us that water quality can be affected by more than what happens at the treatment plant.

Water still needs to travel through reservoirs, public infrastructure and household plumbing before it reaches your glass. That is why many New Zealand households are choosing an additional layer of filtration at the point where their drinking water is actually used.

Growing focus on water quality

The latest report from New Zealand’s water-services regulator, Taumata Arowai, found strong progress in the treatment of council water supplies. However, it also reported that only 45% of large council supplies met all distribution-network safety assurance requirements.

More recently, repeated E. coli detections in the ?paki water supply led to a boil-water notice and a formal direction from Taumata Arowai for the supply to introduce chlorination. This is a localised incident, rather than an indication that New Zealand’s tap water is generally unsafe, but it demonstrates how water-quality issues can occur within individual communities and supplies.

It also reinforces an important point: protecting drinking water involves its entire journey from its source and treatment through to distribution, building plumbing and the final point of use.

Added confidence at the kitchen tap

Installed discreetly under the bench, a Billi system filters water immediately before it is dispensed. This gives households greater control over the quality and taste of the water they drink every day.

Billi’s premium filters use BWT Fibron X® technology, with different filtration options available to suit different water conditions and household needs.

The 5-micron Fibron X® filter helps reduce sediment, chlorine, unpleasant tastes and odours. For homes requiring a higher level of filtration, the 0.2-micron Fibron XC® filter also provides independently tested reduction of parasitic cysts, including Cryptosporidium and Giardia.

For households specifically concerned about PFAS, Billi’s external PFAS Reduction Filter provides another targeted filtration option. It has been independently tested to reduce PFOS and PFOA by up to 99.6%.

Better water, made effortless

A Billi system combines advanced filtration with everyday convenience. Depending on the model selected, households can enjoy instant filtered boiling, chilled and sparkling water from one beautifully designed dispenser.

That can mean less reliance on bottled water, no kettle taking up valuable bench space and fresh filtered water always ready for drinking, cooking, entertaining and filling the family’s water bottles.

With the main system installed beneath the bench and a choice of dispenser styles and finishes, Billi brings practical functionality into the kitchen without compromising its design.

An important note about water-quality notices

Billi systems are designed for use with a safe drinking-water supply.  Point-of-use filtration provides an additional layer of protection for normal household use, but it does not replace municipal water treatment or make a microbiologically unsafe supply safe to drink.

If a boil-water, do-not-drink or do-not-use notice is issued in your area, always follow the instructions provided by your water supplier and [Taumata Arowai]. Water Service Authority NZ.
